12:36 pm - Dino FAQ
|

http://www.deanhaspiel.com/
Emmy award winning artist, Dean Haspiel, created the Eisner Award nominated BILLY DOGMA, the semi-autobiographical digital comic, STREET CODE, helped pioneer personal webcomics with the invention of ACT-I-VATE, and co-created/co-curates, TRIP CITY.net, a Brooklyn-filtered, multimedia salon.
Dean has drawn many great superhero and semi-autobiographical comic books published by Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Dark Horse, IDW, Image, Scholastic Graphix, Toon Books, Top Shelf, Playboy, The New York Times, and Tor.com, including critically acclaimed collaborations with Harvey Pekar (American Splendor, The Quitter), Jonathan Ames (The Alcoholic), Jonathan Lethem (Cousin Corinne’s REMINDER), Tim Hall (The Last Mortician), and with Inverna Lockpez on the Harvey Award winning, CUBA: My Revolution. Dean illustrated the Super Ray comics art for HBO’s “Bored To Death,” for which he won an Emmy award for his work on the opening title sequence. Recently, Dino teamed up with Ben McCool to co-create THE FIVE-DIMENSIONAL ADVENTURES OF DIRK DAVIES, an original webcomic [loosely based on the Namco arcade video game, Warp & Warp] for ShiftyLook.
TRIP CITY is the current vista where Dean Haspiel’s cosmic bruiser, Billy Dogma, excavates unexpurgated romance and adventure with his knock ‘em dead dame, Jane Legit, while flexing two-fisted aggro-moxie and purple staccato for the 21st Century.

4:27 pm - Dean Haspiel & Seth Kushner interviewed on Word Balloon podcast
|
Me and Seth Kushner were interviewed by John Siuntres on the latest Word Balloon podcast where we discuss TRIP CITY, Leaping Tall Buildings (written by Christopher Irving), our current projects + the Before Watchmen and Jack Kirby controversies, digital comics, and more.
“Dean Haspiel and Seth Kushner return to Word Balloon to discuss the TRIP CITY website, a multimedia hub for many Brooklyn creative artists. Dean and Seth have been co-hosting the Trip City Podcast featuring peer-to-peer conversations between comic book creators, and other media creators and stars. Kushner is also here to talk about his photographic work in the new comics history book Leaping Tall Buildings written by Christopher Irving. Irving and Kushner produced an excellent look at creators from golden age stalwarts like Joe Simon, Irwin Hasen, and Jerry Robinson, to today’s web comic innovators. From mainstream to underground no era or genre of comics is ignored, and the profiles presented by the duo are unparallelled. Haspiel talks about current projects like making the 6 page digital comic for THE DOORS mobile app, which depicts the band’s official point of view of the infamous Miami concert of March 1st, 1969. Haspiel also has a Godzilla Legends issue this month from IDW written by Bobby Curnow, and a quirky upcoming 8 page Spider-Man story for Marvel later this year. The guys also discuss the Before Watchmen and Jack Kirby controversies, digital comics and more.”

9:38 pm - FLAUNT exclusive interview with Dean Haspiel
|

http://flaunt.com/flaunt/flaunt-exclusive-dean-haspiel
Excerpt: “I’d say my comics border on romance, science fiction, crimes of the heart; they’re very earnest and invoke empathy. You know, we live in a cynical world right now where a lot of our TV shows and our movies are a lot darker than they used to be and as I get older I’ve discovered that I’m more interested in movies like the ones by Preston Sturges from the 1940s or noir because not only were there a lot more basic truths that were being told artistically back then, but also there was a sense of hope and I feel like a lot of today’s stories lack that. What I try to do is take the bombastic parts of what I love between you know kung-fu, horror, hip-hop, and electronica and I try to mix that up and I’m kind of DJ’ing those stories into my own work. It’s the only way I can describe it.”
